Pandemonium Party
“Miss Roth?” Michael asked in a calm voice.
“Yes Michael?” she replied.
“Can we have a pizza party? Please!”
“I’ll tell you what. If you guys can be quiet during silent reading time, we can have a pizza party!” she said with a wide grin.
“Yay!” he shouted in a not-so-calm voice unlike before.
“Calm down, it’s time to read. And remember, not even a whisper!” Miss Roth announced candidly.
“Okay!” he said, trying to hold in the excitement.
They were all doing very well; until Michael realized that Jackson still had a big grasshopper in his pocket from recess. Michael started whispering to Jackson, who started whispering to Kate, who of course had to tell Jordyn. Jackson got up to throw the grasshopper out the window, but the grasshopper somehow managed to jump out of his hand! After trying to be quiet, the second graders quickly became anything but quiet! The boys were laughing as the girls screamed and started to jump on to the chairs and desks. Miss Roth was yelling at the kids and telling them to settle down, but her yelling only seemed to make everything more dramatic; causing the boys to laugh harder and the girls to scream louder! Michael (being the cool second grader he was), jumped to the rescue as he yelled, “For the classroom and for Narnia!”
As he tried to jump on top of the grasshopper, he fell on his face, but still made it look heroic! The girls gasped and the boys chuckled as Michael, yet again, tried to tackle the grasshopper. By now the class was in an uproar climbing over tables and chairs, knocking over books, and throwing crayons at the grasshopper to supposedly “harpoon it.” It was pure chaos! Miss Roth kept on yelling and yelling for everyone to sit down, but nobody was listening. Finally the room was so loud that the principal, from all the way down the hallway in his office, could hear them. Mr. Bradley decided he should probably see what all the ruckus was all about, so he began to make his way down to the noisy classroom. He opened the door to find everyone screaming and yelling; and amidst all of the chaos, Miss Roth was standing looking quite distressed. Seeing that she needed help, Mr. Bradley yelled, “EVERYBODY SIT DOWN!”
The yelling and screaming ceased immediately and everyone stared at the principal.
“What is going on here Miss Roth?” he asked.
“I’m sorry Mr. Bradley, sir, you see, the class...was well...ummm, it won’t happen again sir.”
“And see to that it doesn’t, Miss Roth!” he replied rather sternly, but with a bit of amusement in his voice.
The principal left leaving Miss Roth scolding the children fervently.
“Do we still get to have a pizza party, Miss Roth?” asked Michael, a little too innocently.
“You certainly are NOT going to have a pizza party, Mr. Anderson!” she replied, rather angrily.
………
The playground was packed with children playing on the playground. The sounds of clomping shoes and yelling could be heard all over. It was recess!
“Michael!” Kate shouted, “Come over here!”
“Yeah?” he replied, trying to shoot the ball through the hoop.
“It’s 11:40! We have to plan for the pizza party. Let’s gather everybody at the swings.”
Kate and Michael raced across the playground, gathering all of the second graders. They were filled with excitement about the rumors that a pizza party was going to take place. Once everyone heard it was time to gather, they raced over to the swings and gathered in a circle. For a minute or so they sat quietly, all thinking of what had previously happened. No one seemed to move an inch, until a small girl broke the silence.
“So do you guys want to plan a party, or what?!” a small girl screamed with great might.
“YEAH!” They shouted back.
Scattered shouts and screams echoed across the circle, and children began talking amongst each other.
“Alright then, be quiet,” said Michael, “First we need a time. How about tomorrow after recess?”
“Sure,” replied Kate and a few others.
“Okay, now we need to decide on food. Who can bring food?”
A few of their classmates raised their hands and Michael talked to each of them until an agreement was reached on the food.
“So, here’s the plan: Jordyn is bringing cookies, Alex is bringing punch, Max is bringing mini pizzas, and Lexi is bringing candy! Great. Now we need to decide how we will overthrow Miss. Roth so we can have our fun. Any ideas?”
“We can tie her to the flagpole over there!” John Jr. shouted.
“We can shove her in a locker!” Makaela replied, with a giggle.
“We can tie her to a desk in the back of the room!” Lily said.
“Those sound good, but I think Lily’s will work the best. Raise your hand if you agree.”
The majority of children raised their hands, and so it was decided! Lily’s idea was the best.
“Okay, we need one more thing,” said Kate.
“What?” Michael asked.
“We have to tie the teacher up with something, don’t we?”
“Oh yeah! How about a rope?”
“Sounds good! I’ll bring it,” said Kate.
“Okay, so last; how long do we want the party to be?” Michael asked.
“How about infinite?” answered Sam.
“That would be fun, but I have baseball and we might get tired. How about a half-hour? Everyone raise your hands if you are in favor for a half-hour.”
Practically everyone raised their hands so Kate said, “Then it’s settled, we will have the pizza party tomorrow!”
Shouts and screams came from all over as the recess bell rang and children took off running. Recess was over, and though no one could tell how the party would go, the air was filled with excitement!
………
Michael met up with Kate at her locker the next morning to put all of the food and supplies in Kate’s locker.
“I got the rope we needed Michael! Guess how I got it?” she said with her devilish second-grader smile.
“What did you do K?” he replied, smirking slightly.
“I got up very early, before my daddy was awake and I snuck into the garage. Then, I turned the lights on and grabbed my daddy’s rope. I was already back in my room reading Clifford when my daddy woke up!”
“Wow! That’s awesome!” Michael replied, but with a little disappointment as he wished he would have come up with that idea.
When Michael and Kate entered the classroom, everybody turned to look at them. They sat down and when the teacher walked in everybody smiled their malicious little smiles at each other and kept whispering back and forth. When the bell rang for morning recess, everyone ran out of the classroom as quickly as possible.
Later in the day, they once again gathered by the basketball hoop to discuss the final plans.
“Alright everyone, it’s almost time!” Michael said. “Did anyone forget anything?”
They all said, “no” or shook their heads, and so they went on with business.
“Alrighty then. Everything is going as planned. Now remember, don’t go into the classroom after recess. Wait until the teacher comes out to find us so we can capture her.”
Everyone agreed and they played for the rest of recess. Finally, after what seemed like eternity, the recess bell rang, and it was time to go back in. They all quickly ran and stood outside the door to wait.
“Shh….everyone stay quiet! She’s going to come looking for us soon!” Kate whispered worriedly.
A few moments later, they could just barely hear Miss Roth’s footsteps echoing through the hallwa classroom floor.
“Okay, this is it! Everyone prepare your weapons!” Michael whispered.
Seconds later the door opened, and before you could even say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious they had captured her. John Jr. caught her while a few others wrapped the rope around her. After she was tightly wrapped in the rope, Michael used his boy scout skills to tie a more advanced knot. Finally, to finish it off, everyone joined in and pushed her into the classroom and a sat her in a chair near the back of the classroom. Surprisingly, Miss Roth had stayed quiet, mostly because she assumed she could easily get out and then punish them, but her assumptions were incorrect. The moment she was in a stopped position, she began to wiggle and try to worm her way out, but it was no use. Michael’s knot was extremely tight (and well tied.) Apparently she was not going to get out any time soon.
“We did it!” squealed Kate and Jordyn, giving eachother a high-five.
Scattered shouts and howls of joy came from all over as everyone spread out across the room, gathering their party items. Max laid out the mini pizzas, Alex put out the punch, Jordyn got out her cookies, Lexi picked up her candy, and Michael took the silverware and plates out of his backpack. They laid everything they had brought out on a table and put a Justin Roberts CD in the radio. The party had officially begun!
Children threw balled-up paper and paper airplanes all over the classroom, kids jumped on tables and screamed, music blared throughout the classroom! And while this was all going on, Miss Roth sat in the back of the room, stunned, unable to move. It went on like this for about 5 more minutes, when it got even crazier! The boys started passing balls around the classroom! People broke things, and children screamed in Miss Roth’s face! And at the peak of all the noise….
Miss Roth jerked up, her heart beating at the speed of light, sweat running down her back and forehead.
“It was just a dream, just a dream.” she repeated over and over again, trying to reassure herself.
……..
“Good Morning class,” Miss Roth said shakily to her group of shy second graders. “Let’s begin. My name is Miss Roth, and I will be your teacher this year. Why don’t we start off with a name game?”
As no one challenged her in anyway, and only responded with cheerful smiles, she realized that she would have nothing to worry about.
